The Short Answer
Clear the Red Tower (the first tower in the recommended Red → Green → Yellow → Blue order). Completing it unlocks the Map Room, which is where your world map lives. The Map Room is also where you pick up the compass used for navigation.
What the Red Tower Unlocks
Like every tower, Red Tower asks for 5 blorbs plus a key shape. Finishing it grants the Map Room — the game's mapping hub — and earns the Big View achievement. Because the map makes every later expedition easier to plan, Red is the community's recommended first tower.
What the Map Actually Shows
The in-game map is described as a double-sided map covering three zones of the island. Rather than a live GPS, it's a physical, paper-style object you consult — and that's the catch: your backpack holds it, and you need a buddy to help you take the backpack off to read it. Navigation in Big Walk is deliberately analogue, reinforcing the co-op "we figure it out together" loop.
Getting the Compass
The compass is obtained from the Map Room after you've unlocked it at Red Tower. It's one of the verified handheld tools and is handy on long exploration runs before you've memorised landmarks. Treat it as a supplement to the map, not a replacement — and remember both live in the backpack.
Tips for Using the Map
- Do Red Tower early so the map is in your pocket before the longer Yellow and Blue hunts.
- Assign one player as "navigator" who carries and reads the map, freeing others to scout.
- The map covers three zones — if you're crossing a region boundary, re-check the other side rather than assuming you've seen it all.
- Pair the map with the tunnels (unlocked at Yellow Tower) to move between zones quickly once you know where you're going.
Exact map-room steps and the three zone names are still being documented by the community as more walkthroughs are published; this page reflects the verified unlock relationship (Red Tower → Map Room → compass).
