Big Walk Beginner Guide

Everything you need before your first walk — what the game is, how sessions work, how to talk to your friends, and where the journey goes.

What Is Big Walk?

Big Walk is a cooperative multiplayer adventure about teamwork and talking, made by House House — the Melbourne studio behind Untitled Goose Game — and published by Panic. You and a group of 2 to 12 friends set out across a handcrafted open island full of puzzles, tools and discoveries, working together to find your way around. There is no single-player mode: every puzzle is built for cooperation.

The game intentionally strips things down to a few core verbs — discover, experiment, prevail. There are no quest markers, health bars or on-screen prompts; almost everything you interact with is diegetic, and every discovery is your own. If you want the longer version, the home page sums up the world and the four towers.

Platforms, Price & Release

Big Walk launched on August 4, 2026 for Steam (PC), PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with a macOS version also confirmed. At launch it was priced at a 25% launch discount (~$14.99 USD against a $19.99 / £17.99 list price) and earned a "Very Positive" Steam rating (around 90% of roughly 3,100 reviews) plus a Metacritic score of 94. Cross-platform play is supported between Steam, PS5 and Switch 2 as long as everyone is on the same game version.

Starting a Co-Op Session

One player hosts the session; the host's machine holds the save data, so everyone rejoins the same world by coming back to that host. When the host sets up a game they choose a player-count version — 2, 3, or 4+ players — and the island subtly tweaks its puzzles to fit the group size. Because there is no solo mode, you always need at least one friend (up to 12). If a tower ever stalls your group, the host can enable an accessibility option to skip a specific challenge.

Communication & Proximity Voice

Voice is the heart of Big Walk. The game uses proximity voice chat: a friend's voice gets quieter as they wander off, echoes down corridors, and crackles through walkie-talkies when you're far apart. Some puzzles deliberately take voice away — for example locking one player behind soundproof glass — so you learn to relay information with gestures and body language. A key community rule: don't fall back on Steam or Discord voice. The devs and veteran players treat outside voice chat as a "cheat code" that bypasses the intended friction, so using it makes the game worse for everyone involved.

The Four Towers at a Glance

After the tutorial area you can tackle the world in almost any order, but four coloured towers form the backbone of progression. Each tower asks for 5 collectible "blorbs" (the egg-shaped MacGuffins players often call "eggy things") and rewards a major movement unlock:

  • Red Tower → unlocks the Map Room, your world map and compass.
  • Green Tower → unlocks the Chairlift (cable car), the route to the end-game challenge area.
  • Yellow Tower → unlocks the Tunnels, the fastest way to move between regions.
  • Blue Tower → unlocks the Monorail train system.

The community's recommended sequence is Red → Green → Yellow → Blue because it unlocks the most useful travel tools first. All four towers are "technically missable," but you must finish all five progression nodes (tutorial + 4 towers) to reach the ending.

Tools You'll Carry

You'll come across handheld items like walkie-talkies, flashlights, cameras, binoculars, laser pointers, cowbells, flares and a radio. Most make puzzles easier but are rarely required, and inventory is limited to what you can physically carry — you even need a buddy to help take a backpack off to consult the paper map inside. See the full Tools & Toys guide for what each one does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a single-player mode?

No. Big Walk requires at least two players and supports up to 12 in online co-op. There is no offline or solo option.

Is Big Walk crossplay?

Yes — cross-platform play works between Steam, PS5 and Switch 2 on the same game version. See the crossplay & join codes page for the details and the current state of join codes.

How long is the game?

A focused playthrough to the normal ending runs well under the 20+ hours some reviewers logged; the 100% "true" ending with all seven purple challenges adds considerably more.

Do I need a PlayStation Plus / Nintendo Online subscription?

Console players typically need their platform's online subscription for co-op, the same as any other online multiplayer game on PS5 or Switch 2.
